The skies above Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome will be buzzing on Saturday 13 September, as the nation’s model aircraft enthusiasts converge on the World War One site to put their incredible flying machines through their paces.

Remote-controlled model aircraft, many the size of a family car and costing up to £25,000+ each, will be soaring and swooping at the Large Model Air Show, some performing aerobatic and precision manoeuvres in the skies, while visitors will be able to get up close to them on the ground.

Model aircraft attending the event are likely to include examples right across the history of aviation – from painstakingly re-created biplanes from World War One to helicopters reproduced carefully to scale and modern military jets complete with working jet engines. In addition, there will be a selection of land-based models, including military vehicles and tanks from various conflicts, providing plenty to see on the ground.

In between enjoying the ground and air activities, visitors can enjoy burgers and hotdogs from the barbecue, washed down with a cold beer from Datum Attitude brewery, which specialises in aviation-themed craft beers, or take a breather in The Airmen’s Mess café for hot and cold meals, snacks and cakes throughout the day. Plus, all the Museum’s hangars, exhibition spaces, interactive simulators and children’s activities will be open, along with the gift shop and book shop. (Please note, some of the exhibitions and hangars are escorted viewings).

The Large Model Air Show offers a great day out for the whole family and is expected to be a sell-out – so to be sure of seeing these amazing models, buy your tickets in advance: adults £15, children aged 6-15 & concessions £8, age 0-5 free, and family ticket £39.99 (plus a small booking fee). Any remaining tickets will be available on the gate.

Doug Shorter, Operations Supervisor of Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome, comments: "This exciting event has grown over the past few years and is a fantastic family day out. The flying runs seamlessly throughout the day, from 10am to close of play at 4pm. The ground exhibits add additional interest, from the model boat clubs to the superbly engineered quarter-scale steam traction engines that can be seen travelling along the central road. We look forward to seeing you here!"

On non-event days, Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome, Hackman's Lane, Purleigh CM3 6RN is open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10am to 4pm, until 7 December, with fascinating exhibition halls, historic aircraft, interactive flight simulators, pedal planes and more, to keep every member of the family happy. #
